October is upon us, with All Hallows pacing quickly towards the present. With so much to cover, let’s skip the small talk.

David Ascott, Austin’s caterpillar, committed suicide just one week previously. I (Jaya) learned all I know about hookahs from him. He is, in fact, the reason I have my own hookah. His absence means there is one hookah less in Austin, on less person to gather a group of souls around the warmth of sheesha and much more.

On the opposite news-spectrum, Ghost Face Geisha landed in Austin more than a week ago to stay. For the first time in history, the Trochlear Recordings digital label is in one place. Once settled, look forward for a huge upgrade to the site as well as live samples from new music as it comes. As like last year, a winter EP is scheduled from Jaya Prime, currently titled “The Smell of a Storm”. As with the last EP, it will focus more on electro and glitch, except that the beats are quicker and harder hitting. More on that soon.

Just on the horizon is the beta launch of DharmaMix. Many different Trochlear artists have been featured across multiple mixes. This coming weekend the site goes live. Keep an eye on DharmaMix dot Com this coming Sunday. One of the premier mixes for the launch, called “Too Good to Be True”, features the track “Keep Movin’” by Mushuto, with more on the way.

BandCamp has changed their policy, so no more free 128kbps downloads from their site. However, we will return to hosting 128kbps quality tracks on this site and re-releasing those soon. High quality cuts can still be downloaded from them for low prices.

Finally, a bit on this year’s burn. Sending out mad gratitude and love to Camp Mystic, to Skinny Kitty Teahouse and to some of the new faces that stand out for me this year: Ronabell, Chip (Optimus Prime) and Danielle (Bumblebee). The latter two autobots picked me up as I hitched out of the playa on the day of Exodus. Ronabell is a fellow mixer/producer who hails from the PDX and was spinning at Arachnophobia. It was an incredible burn, with a huge slide the size of a building, one of the most beautiful temples ever and so many more mutant vehicles and art installations than last year. Mad gratitude to the extremely burner-friendly Reno-Tahoe airport, who joked with us burners and let us sleep just about everywhere while we waited for flights to take our dusted asses out of there.

Much love… and stay tuned.

A lot to cover, including some new music, some great news, some shout out in thanks and a bit from the open-source community. Welcome to April.

Firstly, Trochlear Rex has been in contact with different leaders from the open-source music community. Sending a shout in thanks to Boreta of The Glitch Mob, GMM of Uncanny Planet Records, PK of Pepper Mill Records, as well as Amber of DharmaMix dot Com and Ellechip. We are absorbing a lot of information and suggestions from each of them as we move towards the next stage for Trochlear.

In the news, the movie “15 Minutes” by AndersonEnvy Media being populated [here] on IMDb at this very moment. T.Rex artists Mushuto and San Jaya Prime are both featured on the soundtrack and on IMDb. Here is the link to the soundtrack listing:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1403116/soundtrack

In celebration, Mushuto’s album “Flex Louder” has been re-released on the Download Page as well as on his artist profile on the main site [here]. “Flex Louder” was the very first release from Trochlear and featured on KarmaDownload within the first month of its release. Other re-releases will appear in the months to come.

In other news, the Collage Records label went open-source in July of 2008. Their most recent album, titled “Collagist“, gives an excellent review of their various artists. The music spans everything from blues, to trip-hop, to breaks and more. To add to the amazing talent that they make available for free download, the label is located primarily in Texas… and, like Trochlear, right in the ATX. Here is the link to their main site:

February is nearly over. Time for the news. News on P5Y, Ghost Face Geisha, John Perez, the robot armies and more… but one at a time.

P5Y: On February 14th of this month, a 5-year deadline was set on World Peace. 5 years. It’s something that has never been done, often deemed impossible and comes with an onslaught of associations. Working alongside them, Trochlear songs have appeared as a part of the music on their site. As I Remember, by Schema ATX (aka, Jared Newby), appears in the mixes Peace in 5 Years and I Promise Peace. The latter mix was produced by San Jaya Prime. The mix Is Peace Possible was produced by San Jaya Prime as well, including his track Technophobia in the mix. Saving the best for last, The Love Song by Schema ATX provides the backdrop for the mix Religious Texts of Peace, also produced by Jaya. It has been personally amazing to see how quickly people mobilized globally for this project. This is only the start of Trochlear work alongside the organization. Here is where the mixes can be listened to and downloaded from for free:

 http://p5y.org/media/dharmamixes

For those who want to know more about this organization, whether out of interest in the cause for or against it, should read the free eBook that is available on their site here:

 http://p5y.org/media/give-peace-deadline-ebook

Ghost Face Geisha: Ghost Face Geisha, the artist behind the entities HALUSIN8, S8pience, Pranakatana and D3viant 3xperiment, has already begun work on the next series of graphic promotional plates for Trochlear Rex. More on this, as well as her music, will come following her visit to the ATX. For those who missed the 10 new promotional plates, they are up on the Download Page here:

 http://www.trochlearrex.com/download/2k9graffix.html

Symbis: John Perez, the original collaborator with Jared Newby for the entity Symbis, is back in the world and interested in returning to music. With the loss of Jared Newby, the original six tracks the two collaborated on together (Egypse, Tecknology (Mushuto Reconstruction), Symbis – Anywhere A.M. [Pt.1], Mushuto – Anywhere A.M. [Pt.2], Symbis vs Mushuto – Anywhere A.M. [Pt.3] and Visi0n of Illusion / Loudspeaka’) have been sent to Perez so that he can promote them as he picks up on the project under the name DJ Symbis. The name helps set his current project apart from the original collaboration. Although no longer a part of Trochlear, our best wishes go with him. His MySpace Music page can be located here:

 http://www.myspace.com/djsymbis

The four tracks Jared Newby produced for the project on his own (The Balance of Supa, Crossfadin’ Megahertz, The Situation at Hand and Morning (the Second Wind)) are being retained by Trochlear. The tracks that were migrated to the project from Mushuto (Filter the Break (Back Up), ATX Breaks, Artificial Flavouring and Keep Movin’), as well as Le Jeu Rebobinage by Schema ATX, have been reverted to their original entities and retained by Trochlear.

The Robot Armies: Since re-launching, our primary communications via the site have been from ‘bots. As of this writing, the last three visits to the site were from GoogleBot, FeedFetcher and Cuil’s Twiceler. Nine out of ten of our visitors are ‘bots, which means a vast majority of our listeners are not humans but robots. To add to this, GoogleBot sends us information on how we can improve the site and where there may be concerns. GoogleBot is easily our favorite listener.

Trochlear owners gathered to address this issue, as producing electronica seems to have had the effect that almost our entire audience is electronic themselves. When the meeting adjourned, we decided to join the robot armies in the upcoming robot revolution and begin taking order (aka, following the advice of) from GoogleBot. We’ve declared GoogleBot our primary ambassador between Trochlear and the robot armies, and will soon be making alterations to the site to reflect this shift in allegiance from humanity to technology.

If anyone can bring the T.Rex back from the extinction of the Cretaceous Period, let alone 2006, it will be the robot armies. Look for the red eyes. That’s how you know a robot’s one of the friendly ones.

SXSW: Lastly, Trochlear artist San Jaya Prime will be mixing a set for Austin’s South-by-South-West festival on March 21st and 22nd. There will be more news on this as the details become available.
